Conserving Hertfordshire’s Otters – A Living Landscape Approach

Our project will undertake habitat creation and enhancement work in order to prevent Otters becoming extinct again in Hertfordshire.Given the large territories used by Otters, this project will take a landscape-scale approach by creating and enhancing a number of ‘stepping stone refuges’ to be used by Otters. Project activity will focus on four nature reserves managed by HMWT. These are Amwell, Hunsdon & Eastwick Meads, King’s Meads and Rye Meads. A programme of habitat creation and restoration work will take place at these sites with the aim of improving conditions for Otters to breed, rest and feed. This work will include building Otter holts, creating fish refuges, coppicing, tree felling and ditch restoration.
