Continued habitat restoration at Coed Craig Ruperra

Coed Craig Ruperra, a Planted Ancient Woodland, was coniferised in the 1920s and largely clear-felled in the 1990s. Ruperra Conservation Trust has spent seven years beginning its restoration to native broadleaf woodland and in the process, have established the presence of habitats and species of particular importance. Work to consolidate the early achievements includes planting hazel in cleared areas to benefit resident hazel dormice. Removing invasive laurel, replanting affected areas with native woodland species, will improve the insect population, thus benefitting foraging bats. Restoration of heathland habitat and pond creation will benefit amphibians and reptiles. Management of these habitat areas will directly benefit several red- and amber-list bird species.
