Projects / Coppicing in Ancient Woodland

Coppicing in Ancient Woodland

Funding is sought to employ a specialist contractor to coppice 0.6 hectares of ancient woodland in Queens Wood. The area is predominately hornbeam with some oak standards and is densely shaded with little ground flora or understory. The area has not been actively managed for c.100 years. Through coppicing the project aims to encourage the regeneration of the shrub layer to benefit nesting birds etc, and increase floristic diversity. The budget also includes a small amount of funding to employ a ecologist to train the volunteer group in survey techniques, so they can continue to monitor the site after the work is complete. The project addresses targets within the Woodland BAP for Haringey for the management of ancient woodland, specifically target 2, create 2 new coppice “falls” by 2008. This project would address 50% of this target.
