Creating Safe and Inclusive Facilities for Women, Girls and the Community, Matson Rugby Football Club, Glos

The is a project to refurbish and modernise the female toilet facilities at Matson RFC clubhouse.

This investment is urgently needed to meet the needs of the growing female membership and the many women and girls who use the facilities through rugby, volunteering, and social activities. As a community hub in one of Gloucester’s most disadvantaged wards, the club supports over 300 members, including more than 200 young people. Modern facilities will ensure dignity, safety, and inclusivity, enabling the club to expand access for women, girls, families, and the wider community.

Matson is a disadvantaged area with high levels of deprivation, unemployment, and low household income. Opportunities for young people, particularly girls, are limited, and safe, structured spaces for them to thrive are few. Matson RFC is one of very few community hubs available locally, offering not just rugby, but also a place for families to gather, socialise, and support each other. In recent years, the mini and youth programmes have expanded significantly, with a growing number of girls taking part in rugby. Many female parents, volunteers, and supporters attend the club every week. Despite this, the toilet facilities have not kept pace with demand. They are outdated, under pressure, and no longer fit for purpose. This risks undermining the progress made in increasing female participation in sport and in community life.

Who will benefit:
• Young people: Over 200 children and young people take part in rugby at the club benefiting from regular physical activity, teamwork, and mentoring.
• Women and girls: Both players and social members will directly benefit from modern, safe, and hygienic facilities.
• Families and the wider community: The club hosts community events, celebrations, and social gatherings, welcoming hundreds of residents from the Matson estate and surrounding areas each year.
• Future generations: Improved facilities will ensure the club remains sustainable and welcoming for decades to come.
