Cruck Cottage – Repairs to Thatched Roof

The Cruck Cottage is a Category A listed building, in the village of Torthorwald, built in the mid 18th century, of cruck construction. The Cottage is unique and the only remaining one of its kind in this area. In 1990 the Cottage was empty and derelict and Solway Heritage managed the careful restoration of the property, using good conservation practice, authentic materials and workmanship and traditional tools.
The aim of the project is to maintain the Cottage in good condition to ensure its future and preserve this important piece of architectural heritage. The objective is to provide quality repairs to the roof thus keeping the building wind and water tight and prolonging the lifespan of the thatch.
