Danbury Common: reptile and amphibian conservation

Danbury Common is one of the most important sites in the Region for reptiles and amphibians (herptiles). 9 of the 12 UK herptile species have been recorded at Danbury Common, 6 of which are priority species for conservation action in the UK BAP (2007). Records of these 9 herptile species have been made by the wardens and members of the public. However, to further progress the nature conservation management for these special species, a more detailed survey of the herptiles is necessary. This will require an expert survey, by licenced contractors, as several of these species are protected in law and also need special survey methods.

Objectives:
1. Survey ponds for amphibians (Newt, Frog & Toad)
2. Survey for hibernation and basking sites of Grass Snake, Adder, Slow-worm and Common Lizard.
3. Enhance habitats through targetted management for the herptile species present and create one new pond for amphibians.
