Dean Bank Park Inclusive Play Area, Ferryhill

This project will regenerate the existing Play Area located in the former Miner’s Welfare Park at Dean Bank in Ferryhill. Monies would specifically be spent on removing the old equipment, and installing new, modern, challenging and inclusive play equipment, together with elements of landscaping, to make the park more aesthetically pleasing and welcoming. Being located in an area of high deprivation with a higher-than-average number of low-income families, traveller families and rental properties, it is especially important that a free, modern recreation facility continue to be provided for residents and children of this disadvantaged community.

Having served the community as a vital recreational space for families and children, for the past 15 years, the existing play facility is now at the end of its life cycle. Equipment is worn and tired due to the passage of time, with individual pieces of equipment on the verge of being condemned on Health & Safety grounds. With existing facilities now limiting play opportunities for this diverse community, securing external funding to replace this aging facility with a more inclusive play area is essential, and considered a priority by Ferryhill Town Council, to ensure that all children, regardless of ability, can enjoy safe and engaging play experiences. Investing in a new play area will not only mitigate the hazards currently faced, but also foster a safer, more welcoming environment for local children, families and visitors to the area.

The project will incorporate inclusive play equipment, such as wheelchair-accessible facilities, sensory play panels, and adaptive climbing structures, this new facility will ensure that all children, including those with disabilities, can participate fully. This commitment to inclusivity promotes social interaction, understanding, and acceptance among children, fostering a sense of belonging.
