Dean Wood Rhododendron Clearance

Dean Wood occupies a sheltered clough in the West Pennine Moors and covers 5-hectares. Due to the precipitous nature of the terrain it is not open to public access and remains predominantly undisturbed. It is a Biological Heritage Site and a priority Upland Oakwood habitat, listed in local and national Biodiversity Action Plans. This habitat is under threat Rhododendron ponticum. Spreading rapidly this species shades out native species. A specialist contractor is required to fell the Rhododendron, treat the stumps and burn the resultant brash. An interpretation board will explain the site to passing walkers.
