Projects / Denge Woods Habitat Restoration Project

Denge Woods Habitat Restoration Project

Our aim is to impove and restore habitat for the Duke of Burgundy butterfly and 4 other UKBAP Priority Species in the Denge Woods through habitat management and by reconnecting the woodland ride network and re-establishing links between existing and potential butterfly sites. The project will help achieve the Kent Biodiversity Action Plan objective of conserving BAP woodland butterflies in Mixed Broadleaved Woodland.
The project will improve existing habitat and increase potential habitat for the highly threatened Duke of Burgundy by felling/ clearing encroaching scrub and trees along shady woodland rides; widening rides and creating scallops (ride-side clearings); and cutting/ removing uneconomic Sweet Chestnut coppice condition and establish a succession of open habitat.
