Denton Island Community Centre – Community Garden (007210)

The project will construct and landscape an accessible and welcoming community garden and social space surrounding Denton Island Community Centre, Nursery and Youth Centre. Denton Island is located near Newhaven’s town centre (which lacks green space) and residential areas, easily reached and well-known to local people. The project site is currently a paved walkway, car park and fenced, sloping unused wasteland area that will be reclaimed for community benefit. The project will create dedicated garden and social spaces with sand and water play area, sensory and edible beds, seating and picnic areas, biodiversity elements and wildlife habitats. The project will promote environmental sustainability with rain water harvesting, recycled materials, photovoltaic lighting, wind turbines and fruit trees. Local people have been involved in designing the space to ensure their needs are incorporated and will be further involved in the project’s development to help create a sense of ownership.
