Projects / Development of Moat Brae House

Development of Moat Brae House

The project aims to develop Moat Brae, a ‘B’ listed Georgian villa in Dumfries, southwest Scotland, as a National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling. The house was designed and constructed by Walter Newall in 1823 and has an historic association with JM Barrie who played games of fantasy in the adjacent landscaped gardens while a schoolboy at nearby Dumfries Academy in the 1870s. It is therefore acknowledged as the ‘Birthplace of Peter Pan’. The project will make a significant contribution to the regeneration of Dumfries Town Centre, be an important community and learning facility and an international tourist attraction.
