Digging Deeper: James Henry Greathead’s story

Greathead’s story will be told through immersive displays and multi-media interactives which illustrate how the Greathead Shield worked and will show the impact it had on tunnelling and the development of underground travel, in London and around the world. Previously unseen objects and archival materials will be displayed to the public, including drawings, photographs, models and film.As outlined below these objects will be presented as part of an immersive experience taking visitors on a journey from the tunnels dug by Greathead to the tunnels through which Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) trains will begin running as the gallery opens. A sensory experience integrating 3D objects into an immersive multi-media show with sound, video, movement and light, will take visitors, once they have put on a hard hat and high vis vest,back to the 1860s.
