Dorset Welly Zone Project

The project will address a number of specific targets identified within the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and the Dorset Biodiversity Strategy for which Dorset Wildife Trust is lead partner. The project will identify the presence and extent of important intertidal habitats and species along the Dorset coast adjacent to the maritime Natural Area and make this information available in a variety of accessible formats. Carrying out systematic surveys of the habitats identified above is specified as a priority, as is the dissemination of information to support better conservation of these important marine and coastal features. The project will enhance our knowledge and understanding of Dorset’s intertidal habitats and species in order to better manage this important habitat. There are two main strands to the Dorset Welly Zone project:
1. Intertidal biotope mapping in Lyme Bay and Poole Bay
2. Establishment of a network of marine volunteers to undertake a suite of intertidal surveys and ongoing monitoring work.
