Dumfries and Galloway Riparian Invasive Non-Native Species Project

The project aims to enhance the amenity and public access opportunities on the region’s rivers through the removal of invasive non-native species (INNS) such as Japanese knotweed (JK), giant hogweed (GH) and Himalayan balsam (HB).

The project is being co-ordinated by the Catchment Management Initiative with practical chemical and mechanical control of INNS being carried out by Annan District Salmon Fisheries Board (ADSFB) and Nith DSFB. The project is also working with the D&G Criminal Justice Department who will supply 2 teams of offenders on Community Service Orders to undertake mechanical cutting of Himalayan Balsam on the Annan and Nith Catchments. In return the project will offer offenders brushcutter training, leading to a formal qualification. The project will create two full time INNS control project officer posts.
