Durham University Botanic Garden

Durham University is one of the oldest universities in the UK. It was opened in 1832. The land on which the botanic garden stands is owned by the University. It was started in 1970 and opened to the public in 1988.
The Botanic Garden is a public amenity developed from a teaching / research facility containing plant collections from around the world. The garden is important both as a tourist destination and as a green space for the local community.
The University aims to enhance the visitor experience and increase the potential for environmental education by opening an area of untouched mature woodland and ancient meadowland which is currently unsuitable for visitors from a health and safety perspective.
In order to conserve and provide access to this environment the University needs to secure boundaries, provide orientation / interpretation and make potential hazards safe.
