Early Years Play at White Colne Meadows, White Colne Parish Council, Colchester

This is a project to install new early years play equipment at White Colne Meadows.
White Colne Meadows is a six-acre public open space with allotments, woodland trails, wildflower meadows, a dipping pond, and community event space. Existing play facilities suit older children, but there is little for under-7s. The project will introduce a railway-themed play train with tunnels, slide, and seating, reflecting the site’s heritage beside the former Colne Valley Railway, alongside a ticket office for imaginative play. Additional inclusive and nature-themed items will include a nest swing and a bee-shaped springer positioned near the wildflower meadow, creating a balanced, engaging and accessible play area for younger children.
White Colne Meadows is a well-used community space, located beside the allotments, outdoor gym, and village hall - which regularly hosts children’s parties and informal family gatherings. The site already supports a range of successful, funded initiatives: the outdoor gym (Sport England), the Winter Hub (National Lottery Community Fund), and a not-for-profit community café supported by the Parish Council. Together, these facilities create an established multi-generational community hub, bringing regular footfall and serving both White Colne and neighbouring villages. The proposed early years play equipment will complement these activities by providing a safe, engaging space for younger children. It will particularly benefit grandparents caring for grandchildren, single-parent families, and local childminders, encouraging intergenerational use and increasing time spent outdoors. Anticipated outcomes include improved physical activity levels in early years children, enhanced social interaction and play-based learning, reduced isolation for carers, and stronger community cohesion through shared use of a well-integrated, multi-generational space.
Environmental considerations: The equipment will be sourced from a UK-based supplier, designed and manufactured using certified, sustainably sourced timber, reducing transport emissions and supporting responsible forestry. The design prioritises natural materials over plastics and requires no mains power, keeping the project low carbon. Located within an existing green space, the installation avoids additional land use and major groundworks. Equipment will be set into grass with minimal surfacing, maintaining natural drainage. Nature-inspired elements alongside the wildflower meadow will promote awareness of biodiversity and pollinators. Durable materials, a 15-year warranty, and established maintenance will minimise waste, while encouraging outdoor play supports wellbeing and connection to the environment.
