East Keswick Wildlife Trust – Ox Close Wood

Ox Close Woods is one of the most important ancient woodlands in the Wharfe Valley. It is surrounded by intensively cultivated agricultural land on three sides with the River Wharfe on the fourth side. The Trust is keen to plant a hedgerow to give clear definition to the boundary and provide a thick wildlife corridor and woodland edge habitat. Plant varieties to be used are hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, hazel, guilder rose, dog rose and holly, supplemented by honeysuckle and spindle from the Trust’s own nursery. Canes and guards will be used for protection from rabbits and 100 alder buckthorn will also be planted.
