Empowering the West Tyrone Red Squirrel Group

This project aims to strengthen the position of the WTRSG/DDA as a local red squirrel group actively engaging in red squirrel conservation through the following objectives.

1. To enhance our red and grey recording campaign by 2013 by;
• Increasing the number of posters in circulation
• Increasing general awareness through a media campaign
• Delivering targeted talks to key groups (farmers/landowners)
• Running public events

2. To facilitate grey squirrel control by;
• Setting up a trap loaning scheme for group members in 2012
• Providing training on trapping and trap hygiene control in 2012
• Providing trap hygiene equipment to participating members in 2012

3. To assist squirrel pox virus research and genetic research by;
• Training members how to collect samples correctly
• Providing equipment to prepare dead samples

4. To ensure the sustainability of the group by increasing positive action for red squirrels and therefore encouraging more members to join.
