Enhancements to One Island Pond

One Island Pond is a former gravel pit that was dug circa 1900. It now supports a range of flora and fauna including a number of plants which are uncommon in the London region.

Over the years the silt level in the pond has increased and there’s a spreading stand of reedmace which is reducing the open water habitat. In addition, the scrub woodland to the west of the pond has encroached towards the edge of the pond, consequently visitors can no longer walk around the pond.

The aim of the project is to push back the scrub woodland, remove the silt from the pond and create a reedbed. Thereby improving pedestrian access and enhancing two priority habitats: standing water and reedbeds.
