Enhancing Access and Wildlife Viewing at Montrose Basin

Montrose Basis well used by a range of people in the local community for recreational and educational purposes and also attracts a growing number of visitors from further afield. Over 10,000 visitors come to Montrose Basin annually.

There is a need to carry out a number of enhancements to the reserve to improve the visitor experience.

– Replace the boardwalk access to enhance visitor safety
– Renovate the sandmartin bank to provide better habitat and hence increased opportunities for viewing breeding sandmartins
– Create a wildflower meadow to enhance the visitor experience
– Replace the fence around the saltpans to allow grazing management which will improve habitat for waders and ground nesting birds. As this area is below the visitor centre windows, this will increase the diversity of species which the public can view.
– Control invasive non-natives such as giant hogweed – which can potentially be harmful to visitors
