Enhancing biodiversity in partnership at Barry Buddon

Enhancing biodiversity at Barry Buddon is a unique woodland creation initiative in Scotland. Delivered in partnership by the Woodland Trust Scotland (WTS) and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the overall partnership aims to increase native woodland cover at key defence estate locations in Scotland, creating mutually beneficial outcomes for both nature and people. Barry Buddon is the 2nd planted site in Scotland (the first being RM Condor in Arbroath). With the help of the Angus Environment Trust, WTS aims to plant 31,000 native broadleaf and Scots pine saplings in 2014. The overall aim of the project is to enhance woodland cover at Barry Buddon, in partnership with the DIO, to benefit both people and wildlife. The objectives of the project are: a) to plant 31,000 trees at Barry Buddon in 2014b) to help buffer and protect surrounding habitats by creating 21.5 hectares of new woodland c) to improve natural military training facilities and woodland amenity resource for local communities.
