Enhancing conditions for Northern Ireland Priority Species at Portmore Lough

The project aims to bolster primarily the lapwing population at Portmore Lough by creating suitable habitat on wet grasslands and producing a mosaic of flooded and non-flooded ground, with short vegetation, plenty of invertebrates and some semi-permanent pools. This area will be surrounded with a predator proof fence to prevent the predation of nest and chicks and help raise productivity. We also plan to re-profile ditches and create clean, shallow ponds which are perfect habitat for the Irish Damselfly and fence this area off to prevent grazing animals on the reserve entering. Both lapwing and Irish Damselfly are UK BAP species.
