Enhancing Sutton Fen – A Jewel of Biodiversity in the Broads

To complete baseline surveys, initial management and restoration of sedge beds at Sutton Fen. The site was purchased November 2006, it is known to be an important site for the flora and fauna characteristic of the broads but specialist survey work is needed in order to understand the complex nature of the site. The site is approximately 109 hectares; up to 50 hectares will be restored as fen through traditional management. The project includes detailed invertebrate and botanical surveys, and water sampling and analysis in order to devise the most appropriate management to maintain quality of the site, the purchase of a brushcutter/chainsaw to maintain scrub free areas, repairs to fencing to re-instate grazing management, predator management, and fen restoration, employing a traditional sedge cutter using a scythe.
