Enzymic Degradation of Refuse-derived Cellulosic Waste for Production of Glucose and Lactate Polymers

Biodegradable polymers (PLA) can be synthesises from lactate derived from agricultural crops, but a cheaper feedstock is required. Cardiff University has investigated the degradation of wheat bran and biomass grasses using enzymic and fermentation techologies to yield glucose and lactate. This proposal aims to develop a novel route to lactate by drgrading fibrous cellulosic material arising locally from processed domestic refuse. The use of refuse-derived material is particularly attractive for reasons of sustainability. The ability to degrade this low cost cellulose fibre waste is a critical step in potential supply chains towards sweeteners, ethanol and hydrogen, as well as bio-plastics
