Ephemeral Ponds of the SSSis of the Eastern Uplands of Radnorshire

The ephemeral upland ponds of Eastern Radnorshire constitute a rare habitat in the UK showing close similarities to those of the New Forest in form and species composition including the rare pillwort and fairy shrimp. These ponds qualify as UK Priority habitats and are included in both the Wales and Powys LBAPs. No inventory of these exists therefore conservation and/or remediation cannot meaningfully take place if the extent of the resource is unknown. The project will locate all such pools in the 4 Eastern Radnorshire SSSIs producing an inventory of their form, a survey of their unique vegetation, quantify the extent of rare species, evaluate threats and produce a conservation management strategy for these sites which are almost exclusively on common land.
