Ex Canal Towpath renovation in Rotherham Metropolitan Coucil area.

The towpaths of this abandoned canal forms part of an end-to-end long distance trail – part of which is a section of the Trans Penine Trail. In mid-2016 a section north of the junction of the Dearne and Dove Canal with the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation had become impassable in places. This section in Rotherham could become an alternative, quieter and safer route for walkers only, as there is already a paved more or less parallel cycle path which bypasses this section. Work by Rotherham MBC in late 2016 has resulted in the towpath being made passable again, but more work to reduce the need for routine maintenance may be required.
Consideration is also being given by the 3 authorities along the line of the canals to promotional material, information boards, walking leaflets and artwork to encourage more use. In addition, it is hoped that matched funding from the Dearne Valley Landscape Trust will expand the the
Proposals should emerge from group meetings later this year and in 2018.
