Experiments, Innovation and Design: How the Paxtons Grew the Chatsworth Garden

Through the inspirational work of Joseph and Sarah Paxton, visitors will discover, explore
and understand the scientific and engineering marvel that is the Chatsworth Garden.
The project will develop a permanent exhibition within the setting of Chatsworth’s garden which will utilise the rarely seen archival collections to bring to life the stories of Sir Joseph Paxton and his wife Sarah. Visitors will be guided to explore the way in which Paxton used his skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to overcome the many problems he faced when designing his industrial marvels and creating the Chatsworth we see today.
The interpretation will add a new level of engagement for visitors, with a design and format tailored to meet the specific needs of primary age school groups and families. The exhibition will take place at specific Paxton-influenced locations throughout the 105 acre garden, and will
produce a corresponding ‘Paxton Trail’ to link all the sites together.
