Fishwick Local Nature Reserve Extension Project

The aim of the project is to incorporate land into the existing Fishwick Bottoms Local Nature Reserve (LNR) which was created 2 years ago from a landfill site. The project will increase the size of the LNR by 7 hectares from 16 to 23 hectares and will improve access to the LNR from the adjacent communities of Fishwick and St Matthews.
The project site is currently derelict urban fringe land previously used for quarrying and tipping. The land is not in active management and suffers from anti social behaviour. The land includes areas of ancient woodland and swamp habitat which are both LCC Biological Heritage Sites. The extension of the LNR will enable public access into this new land and the existing nature reserve and will bring the land into active ecological management. Bringing this derelict underused land back into beneficial use as an accessible attractive LNR where people can learn about the local wildlife is the main aim of the project.
