Forest of Dean Buildings Preservation Trust – Gunns Mill

Phase 1 of restoration of Gunns Mill.
Described by English Heritage as the earlist surviving blast furnace in England and one of national, even European significance, Gunns Mill has been derelict for many years.
Probably built in 1628 and then known as the Kings Iron works, it was destroyed in the Civil War, rebuilt in 1682/3 (dated lintel), converted to a papermill by 1743 and so used until about 1900. Since that time the building has deteriorated, become abandoned and the remains are now only standing due to temporary work to support the structure by English Heritage.
A new Forest of Dean Buildings Trust has been formed to seek to restore the building and convert it to sustainable use.
Phase 1 comprises:
. Detailed historical analysis of site
. Updated structural survey
. Ecological survey (and appropriate conservation plan)
. Outline architectural proposals.
