Fort Road Recreation Ground, Lewes - Newhaven Community Forest Garden (008288)

The aim of the project is to create a Forest Garden at the Fort Road Recreation Ground. Fort Road is the main recreation ground in the area and has thriving sport clubs including cricket/Football/Tennis and Bowls clubs. It also has a successful children's nursery and scout group on the site. The recreation ground is situated next to Castle Hill Nature Reserve and will be part of the Knepp Estate Weald to Waves project 100 mile wildlife corridor www.wealdtowaves.co.uk. Following consultation with local residents they are keen to set up a community forest garden to help expand awareness of the nature reserve, and to improve the biodiversity and nature in the park by planting trees and hedging, and creating wildlife corridors from the park to the nature reserve. The current play area is due to be relocated next to the children's nursery, this will enable the previous play area to be used for the community forest garden.
