Foxburrow Farm Sandlings Grazing

Foxburrow Farm is the base for the Trust’s flock of 385 Hebridean sheep and herd of 24 Exmoor ponies which graze the Suffolk Sandlings. The Suffolk Sandlings is made up of 42 heaths, ranging in size from 247ha to fragments under 2ha. This project will support the conservation grazing programme on 320ha of Sandlings heath on 10 sites across the Sandlings.

The peripatetic nature of the grazing regime is key to the conservation management of this network of heaths. Stock are moved between heaths and onto the meadows to achieve the optimal grazing outcomes and maintain appropriate stocking densities across the year. The heaths offer a lean diet and in winter, back up grazing is needed for the flock.

The projkect will construct permanent stock fencing around 3 former set aside fields at Foxburrow Farm, to create 25.5 acres of back-up winter grazing for the sheep flock and ponies. This will require 2465m of livestock fencing and three field gates.
