Freedom to Graze

The project aims to fund the purchase of capital infrastructure to enable high welfare cattle grazing at Freemans Pools using LWT owned Longhorn Cattle. Grazing small isolated Nature Reserves over three counties is a big challenge of LWT operations none more so than with grazing animals. A flying flock / herd managed over three counties brings challenges in ensuring high welfare standards can be met at all times. Our horned choice of breed presents a challenge, however, temperament and ability to thrive in a broad range of grazing scenarios justifies breed selection.

With no road legal handling facility for horned cattle available on todays market a need for fixed horned animal cattle crushes at each location is a vital piece of infrastructure to enable conservation grazing to be carried out. Meeting both an animal welfare and staff safety requirement. The application is to fund handling facilities, clean water provision, badger proof mineral lick stands and no fence technology.
