Friends of Nutclough Woods, Hebden Bridge

Nutclough was ancient Oak woods with a mixed understory of native trees (Hazel), and ground plants (Bluebells). Until the Industrial revolution, they were used for coppicing – producing hazelnuts for food and Hazel rods for countryside crafts. Later, they became used to produce faster-growing trees to power local mills. A mill pond and waterwheel was constructed to cut wood. Because of the overgrowth of faster-growing Beech and Sycamore, the site became very dark and run down; with little active management and a severe lack of biodiversity. Friends of Nutclough Woods was formed in 2003 to support their regeneration and preservation for the benefit of local families.
