Fritillaries for the Future New Forest

This project will increase the population and distribution of Pearl-bordered & Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterflies in the New Forest National Park. Working across a network of 6 sites, woodland conservation will restore 12.5ha of essential breeding habitat. The Pearl-bordered Fritillary is one of the UK’s fastest declining butterflies & in SE England only 15 sites remain. The Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary has also declined significantly across the UK with only 3 sites remaining in the New Forest. This project will make a significant national contribution to the conservation of both species. Work will include: • Maintain & enhance existing, and create new habitat for Pearl-bordered & Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries through tree felling, scrub management, coppicing & ride management • Monitor habitat management results & assess butterfly responses • Hold workshops for landowners & volunteers A part-time Project Officer will oversee contractors & volunteers, & co-ordinate surveying & monitoring
