Gateway to Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Warton Quarry Picnic Site improvements

Warton Crag Picnic Area is a popular open space designated as Local Nature Reserve for its wildflower rich calcareous grassland, woodland and peregrine falcon breeding site. The project has four aims:

installing ‘rock armour’ to prevent vehicles accessing the quarry floor to prevent damage to the species rich grassland.

opening up woodland to create a low mobility access view point for Morecambe Bay

volunteer led habitat management works to include woodland thinning, coppicing, scrub management and grassland management.

Warton Crag Picnic site is a starting point for walks over Warton Crag Natrue reserve site of special scientific interest note for its rare butterfly population of High Brown and Duke of Burgundy Fritillary. Information panels and trail markers will be installed for visitors to explore the wildlife, heritage and geology of the wider Warton Crag Nature reserve.
