Geology Trail – Improvements and Investigations

Salthill Quarry Local Nature Reserve in Clitheroe is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its important geological features. It was a former limestone quarry. The footpath which runs round the site linking ten marked viewing points is known as teh Geology Trail.
The aims of the project:
1. Repair sections of the trail which have become worn and eroded.
2. Improve access on the trail and generate new access at designated points.
3. Clear vegetation off the main section of the rock face.
4. Carry out controlled excavation of a fossil rich area, working with local geologists and schools.
5. Develop a set of new information markers based on using iphones and the QR code code system.
6. Ensure that all features are kept clear of vegetation by use of a volunteer team under the direction of the Rserve Officer.
