Giving nature a home at Lough Portmore

Portmore Lough Nature Reserve is part of Lough Neagh and Lough Beg Natura 2000 site and an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) - a wetland of international importance. This project will deliver biodiversity improvements on wet, marshy areas of the reserve which are currently inaccessible with existing machinery through the provision of a four-wheel drive tractor which will create appropriate habitat. The result of these actions will be an enhanced management regime on the reserve with benefits to endangered species. The expansion of the land available to manage will also improve opportunities for important species such as Irish hare and Irish lady’s-tresses orchid to expand their range for the benefit of nature and people.
