Glasgow’s Buzzing

A massive 3,000,000 hectares of flower-rich grassland have been lost in the UK since World War Two – these flower-rich areas were vital habitats for wild bees and bugs to nest and feed. As a result this has caused large declines in UK pollinators as well as other invertebrates. Many urban grassy areas are currently mown and have very little (if any) wildlife value. At Buglife we want to transform these areas, where appropriate, into colourful and wildlife-rich wildflower meadows. The wildlife benefits of these areas would be massive; providing refuges and stepping stones for a range of pollinators such as bees and butterflies, as well as habitat and food sources for a range of other invertebrates, amphibians, mammals and bird species. There are enormous benefits for people too; they can be used as an educational tool or simply spaces of general enjoyment and beauty.
