Grasslands of Caulklands

The project aims to restore/create areas of calcareous species-rich grassland at the Caulklands landfill site – inactive from April 2009. The project goes above and beyond the site’s restoration to benefit the areas biodiversity. 3 hectares of calcareous grassland will be created across remaining area of unrestored landfill by using limestone materials in the capping process. Restore 1.9 hectares of species rich grassland on the edge of the site for botanical & invertebrate interest by tree & scrub control & temporary fencing to allow subsequent grazing management without disturbing the creation areas. End of use of the site will be for conservation and in order to achieve this limestone aggregates and soils will be added to the process of capping to allow natural colononisation to occur from adjacent grasslands. Primary purpose of this application is to purchase limestone aggregates and soils to be used as the main substrate in topsoil layer and part of the subsoil layer.
