Great North Fen Construction Phase 1- Ricknall Carrs

The overall aims for this project are to:

• Restore wetland habitats across the historical Durham Carrs (mosaic of wetland habitats).

• Increase species and habitat diversity and abundance.

• Enhance habitat connectivity at a landscape scale.

With these aims, the project will create a robust network of habitats of sufficient scale to be able to withstand the pressures of climate change and the other threats facing the natural world. Restored habitats will support greater abundance and diversity of species, particularly waders, wildfowl and other species associated with wetlands, from plants and invertebrates to mammals like the otter and water vole. The restored habitats will also sequester and store carbon, help to provide natural flood management and provide opportunities for people to experience and enjoy nature.
