Green-Winged Orchid Project

This project will improve two sites in Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s care, NWT New Buckenham Common and NWT Hoe Rough, to ensure the survival of the green-winged orchid by cutting birch seedlings and hawthorn regrowth with a tractor and flail. We will improve public access by installing two new kissing gates and also by mowing nature trails twice a year at both sites so that they can be enjoyed to the full by visitors. NWT will also control bracken and ragwort to stop these invasive plants taking over the wildflower areas. NWT will also improve the cattle grazing on site.

NWT New Buckenham Common is situated on the edge of the village and is very much part of the village landscape. The villagers use it as a public open space with the village playground next to the nature reserve. NWT Hoe Rough is opposite the entrance to Gressenhall Rural Museum and receives a number of extra visitors as a result. It is located 4 km north of East Dereham.
