Greno Woods – biodiversity, climate change and resilience

Greno Woods is a 189 hectare Site of Ancient Woodland occupying a prominent hilltop site to the North of Sheffield. This projects aims to increase Greno Woods’ resilience in a changing world by helping to mitigate some of the threats posed by climate change, invasive non-native species and the spread of pathogens, and so secure the Woods’ future:
1. Natural Flood Management work to mitigate the twin threats of prolonged drought and occasional particularly heavy rain. 2. Creation of a water storage facility to combat the increasing risk of wildfires during the hotter, dryer summers. 3. Remove or make safe ash, larch and sweet chestnut trees affected by the fungi that cause ash die back Hymenoscyphus fraxineus and the water mold Phytophthera ramorum, and replant with native broadleaved tree species. 4. Remove invasive non-native plant species which are displacing native flora. 5. Fencing improvements to extend conservation grazing on the wood heath. 6. Work to improve the habitat for threatened species.
