Gronant Dunes

We will work with groups of volunteers, alongside the Coastal Ranger for the project site, to carry out practical conservation work for the protection of this SSSI, which also supports several priority species.

Work includes the clearance of invasive scrub including clematis and sea buckthorn, which are detrimental to the dune system as they prevent the movement of sand. These shrubs also reduce the areas of habitat available to the protected natterjack toads and sand lizards, which prefer areas of bare sand and short vegetation.

We will also create a new length of boardwalk. The dunes are bordered by a large holiday park, and at one of the access points from the park to the beach, currently the correct path to the beach is unclear. This has caused people to trample the dune vegetation while creating their own paths. The new length of boardwalk will show people the correct route, allowing the dune vegetation to recover.
