Growing For Colour (Leeds Industrial Museum, Armley Mills)

The project will transform a garden in the grounds of a Leeds Industrial Museum, Armley Mills and utilise it to offer new experiences and teach practical skills in the use of plants for the dyeing of textiles. The garden is situated at a former textiles mill with a rich heritage which we will use as a focus to inspire local people to take pride in the area and develop new skills and experiences. We will provide fun and interesting activities for people to participate in whilst developing and maintaining the colour garden; workshops on the historical use of plants in the textile industry and practical workshops on using traditional techniques for extracting dyes. People will engage in hands-on, creative activities with clear end results, providing a sense of positive achievement through teamwork.
Phase 1 – Recruiting and training of volunteers.
Phase 2 – Practical delivery of colour garden project.
This grant is specifically for phase 2.
