Projects / Habitat Enhancement in the wild Wye Valley

Habitat Enhancement in the wild Wye Valley

The main aims are to improve the grazing management of the grasslands to benefit the overall biodiversity in these wonderful Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSI), to upgrade the footpath network and raise awareness of the sensitive ecology. The Wye Valley's calcareous (limestone) grasslands have a European Special Area of Conservation designation. Sheep and cattle grazing will keep the scrub in check enabling wild flora to thrive. New fencing and gates will be installed which will also prevent sheep from going onto orchid grassland during flowering time. New path revetments will be constructed and path repairs carried out. Interpretation panels will be installed: to raise awareness of the international importance of the site and our responsibility for conserving it.
