Habitat Improvements at Chaddesley Wood

Chaddesley Wood reserve is a SSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and a WWT flagship site. This important ancient woodland forms part of an extensive woodland area that can be traced as far back as the early 13th century. The site also contains two floristically important wildflower meadows. The project will involve a programme of habitat management/restoration work, essential if we are to maintain this reserve as an important wildlife site: 1) The creation of a cattle drinking pool in one of the meadows. Grazing is a traditional form of grassland management, necessary for the maintenance of floral diversity. The pool will also provide additional habitat for newts and grass snakes. 2) Thinning and felling trees overhanging/shading the meadow. 3) Thinning and ride side coppicing within the woodland, to create sunny glades that link up with rides, creating a range of wildlife habitats, corridors for wildlife to spread and improved opportunities for visitors to enjoy wildlife.
