Have I got newts for you?

Woodhouse Washlands is a 56 hectare wetland nature reserve astride the River Rother on the Sheffield-Rotherham border. The river here was artificially straightened during the 1950s turning an area of marsh into the mosaic of grassland, marsh, pools and woodland which we see today.
The object of the project is to restore the wetland and improve it for great crested newts, a priority species in both UK national and local Biodiversity Action Plans, and to channel foot traffic away from sensitive habitats to prevent disturbance to newts and other vulnerable wetland species.
Specific aims are the construction of new wet ditches, scrapes and newt hibernaculum, restoration of existing ponds, improvement of footpaths and signage, some woodland understorey management for newt hibernation and the presentation of workshops to raise public awareness of wetland biodiversity. .
