Hay Meadow, Rochdale – Access to Nature

The site (OS ref: SD867118) is adjacent to Heywood Cemetery in the Roch Valley river corridor. A Site of Biological Importance (Hay Meadow) which Groundwork purchased in May 2014.
This project includes:
Habitat enhancements
• Traditionally laying maturing hedgerows
• Gapping up hedgerows with native deciduous mix species
• Stock proof fencing installed to allow hardy grazing animals to enter the site whilst protecting the planted hedgerows. Field gates added to allow access by agricultural machines.
• Creation of wildlife pond by connecting to an existing flush
Community benefits
• A viewing area with natural seating created for visitors to enjoy wildlife and spectacular views of River Roch. A Veolia interpretation board will be installed.
• Involvement in traditional hedgerow laying and tree planting.
• Volunteering – hand pulling Creeping Thistle and removal of Himalayan Balsam. Later we hope to recreate the premechanical hay harvest and revive traditions of scything and commoning.
