Projects / Hedge Restoration at Christmas Common

Hedge Restoration at Christmas Common

To lay 90m of hedge which has become leggy and overgrown, creating a dense structure and new growth which will benefit wildlife. It will also look visually appealing and is an opportunity to involve the community and raise awareness of traditional hedge-laying practices and conservation benefits.

The hedge is an important wildlife corridor linking areas of old woodland and coppice. Dormouse are not uncommon in this part of the Chiltern Hills and almost certainly will be using this hedgerow. Bats frequent these small paddocks and use the hedgerows and woodland edges to hunt along, as well as numerous species of small bird that use the hedge to nest in.

Some planting up of gaps may be necessary as the work progresses, and species that already occur in the hedge will be used such as hawthorn, hazel and hornbeam. Infill plants will be planted as needed to a density of 6 plants per metre.
