Hengoed Viaduct – Restoration works

Sustrans is seeking support towards preserving and enhancing Hengoed Viaduct Mid-Glamorgan as a feature of cultural and heritage importance. This Grade II* listed structure is one of the most iconic and well-used viaducts on the National Cycle Network (NCN). Opened in 1858 and then reopened in 2000 as a walking and cycling route, the structure features artwork and is a vital local amenity and cross valley link. Support would enable us to carry out an essential phase of restoration to a crucial element of the structure, namely the bases of the public-facing masonry parapets, to ensure integrity of the structure into the future, and help bring the viaduct back to its former glory for the visiting public. An excellent local stonemason would undertake the restoration and will also run a series of training courses for our local volunteers into the art of structure repointing.
